An Initial Look At eBay's 5 Free Insertion Fees every 30 days for Auction-style listings Promotion

PWC Blog - May 1, 2009

Most of you have probably heard by now, eBay is starting a new promotion June 16th to save you money on listings:

The promotion (posted by Dinesh Lathi) - 5 Free Insertion Fees every 30 days for Auction-style listings (http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200905120954402.html) reads:

I’ve got some exciting news about $0.00 Insertion Fees. Starting June 16, 2009, you’ll get 5 free Insertion Fees every 30 days for Auction-style listings.

Here’s how it works: Regardless of your start price, your first 5 Auction-style listings will have NO Insertion Fees when you list with eBay’s Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form.

The Final Value Fee for these 5 listings with $0.00 Insertion Fees will be 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower. Any additional items sold during the same 30-day period will have the same Insertion Fees and Final Value Fees as they do today. Learn more.

Choose the option that works best for you, based on how you list:

  • eBay’s Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form – If you’re currently using one of these forms, you can either take advantage of the 5 free Insertion Fees every 30 days, or opt out by listing your items via an eBay tool or third-party listing solution.
  • eBay tool or third-party listing solution – If you’re currently using one of these tools, you can either take advantage of this new pricing structure by listing your first 5 Auction-style listings every 30 days through eBay’s Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form, or continue with your current practices at the current pricing.

We’re continuing our efforts to lower the upfront costs of selling on eBay. The 5 listings with $0.00 Insertion Fees are especially helpful if you don’t sell a high volume, but offer the kind of unique and hard-to-find inventory buyers expect to find on eBay.

The important facts I feel you should know about this promotion is that it is ONLY for the insertion fees!  When eBay says only for the insertion fees that does not mean you should load up on extras, like 10 day durations on auctions, bold, highlight, etc.  The FREE part is only for the basic insertion fees.

To take advantage of this promotion you must list your items using the sell your item form on the site or simple listing form (not sure what this is but I am looking into it).

If you list your items normally through a third party tool, such as Turbo Lister, you will not be eligible for the five items free of insertion fees.

I am a bit vague myself on a few points on this promotion - which I hope to get cleared up/answered soon.  (when I get answers I will blog them on my blog.)

I am also working on a Excel spreadsheet that will help you calculate which is better, listing your items through third party tools or through the latest eBay promotion/discount offer.

The spreadsheet is about done and I plan to make it live on my website soon.  If you are a subscriber to my newsletter you will have access to it a day sooner than the general public.
